Drink drivers ‘caught in net’

An alleged drink driver with almost four times the legal blood alcohol limit had two children on board when he crashed his vehicle near Millicent on Sunday night.

A police spokesperson said the emergency services were called at 9.15pm to the Southern Ports Highway near Dunns Road after reports a car had left the road and crashed into a large bush.

“Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the crash, including the two child passengers,” the spokesperson said.

“The driver, a 47-year-old man from Beachport, submitted to a breath test and [allegedly] provided a positive result of 0.187.

“He was reported for drink driving and will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.”

The accident scene was also attended by the SA Ambulance Service and CFS units from Millicent and Rendelsham.

Also on the weekend, CFS crews were called to clear up the aftermath of an unrelated motor vehicle accident on Saturday afternoon on Plunkett Terrace, Millicent.

In other police news, a local man has been arrested after doing burnouts in Millicent.

It will be alleged that on August 19 a silver Ford Falcon sedan was seen doing burnouts in George Street.

Mobile phone footage was uploaded to social media, and after further investigations police reported an 18-year-old Millicent man last week for aggravated driving without due care, misuse of a motor vehicle and breaching conditions of his provisional licence.

He was also issued with a direction to produce the vehicle involved for impounding and was later arrested on the same day for failing to comply with that direction.

Enquiries continue to locate the Ford which has South Australian registration of S402BAW, along with two other male suspects involved.

The arrested man was bailed to appear in the Millicent Magistrates Court on September 20.

Meanwhile, a man will appear in court after he was caught drink-driving near Maaoupe.

It will be alleged that about 8pm on August 22 police attended a single vehicle crash on Maaoupe Road.

A 26-year-old Naracoorte man was identified as the driver of the vehicle and underwent a breath test, returning a positive reading of 0.101.

Further enquiries revealed the car was unregistered and uninsured and the driver only had a learner’s permit.

The male was reported for aggravated driving without due care, driving unregistered and uninsured, drink-driving and two counts of breaching learner’s permit conditions.

He will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Police are also investigating suspicious behaviour in Naracoorte, where a man has tried to break into a car.

About 10.25pm on August 20, the man pictured below attempted to open the door of a locked car parked in Panorama Crescent.

He was wearing a grey hood jumper, blue jeans and tan-coloured boots.

Anyone who recognises the man or witnessed suspicious activity in the area is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sergeant Simon Haebich from Naracoorte Police urged community members to take care.

“Members of the public are urged to lock their vehicles at all times and place valuables out of sight to avoid thefts,” he said.

“Any incidents of suspicious behaviour should be reported via the Police Assistance Line immediately on 131444.”
