Dual-name proposal

Mount Gambier tourism drawcards such as the Blue Lake are set to be assigned an Indigenous name as well.

If the State Government proposal is endorsed, the Blue Lake will also carry the Warwar name while the Cave Gardens will also be known as Thugi.

The other dual name proposals for the Blue Lake City are for the Umpherston Sinkhole (to be also known as Balumbul), Leg of Mutton Lake (Yatton Loo), Browne Lake (Kroweratwari) and Valley Lake (Ketla Malpi).

The current European names in general usage date back to colonial times.

Planning Minister Nick Champion is exercising his powers under the Geographical Names Act and has invited public comment on the proposal.

This must be lodged with the Surveyor-General by February 9.
