Eagles soar to top of table

The Penola Netball Club took on Keith in Kowree-Naracoorte Tatiara action on the weekend.

The 13Cs played a great game with some beautiful passages of play and lots of backing up across the mid court.

Maddison Currie was named as best player for her chasing of loose balls and determination.

The 13B side was fortunate enough to have six quarters against Keith.

The girls played some really good netball and it was great to see them put together some great passages of play.

We mixed the teams up and helped fill in for the 13Cs.

The girls’ willingness to be flexible and do what is best for the club is a credit to them and their families.

Well done girls.

Best player was Ruby Hackwill.

The Penola 13A girls came out expecting an easier game this week and that is absolutely not what they got! The first half of the game was goal for goal and this is not how we wanted to finish off the last half.

The girls were asked to step up their intensity and that’s exactly what they did, winning the third 13-2.

The fourth saw our Eagles get a bit puffed and make a few silly mistakes but they still hung onto their lead and finished the game off with the win.

Best players were Lani Mangarangi and Lily Hackwill.

Division 2 started off well matching the well skilled Keith side.

A few minor errors put the girls behind but some good passages of play were positives to come out of the game.

The girls are playing well and improving each week.

Best players were Grace McCarthy and Mia Gartner.

In Division 1 both teams came out with determination, going goal for goal, until several turnovers in defence and accurate shooting saw Penola sneak away with a six point lead at quarter time.

Continuing on into the next two quarters, Penola took control of the game with strong passes throughout the centre and consistent pressure on Keith’s attack, setting themselves up to go into the fourth with a solid lead.

In what proved to be one of their best games of the season, the girls finished with a well deserved 23 goal win.

Best players were Stella O’Brien and Holly Flint.

C Grade is still not playing with a full team, which meant a shaky start.

Keith came out fighting and made us work hard to be in front.

Eva and Alice moved well in the circle making some nice clean passes in while Lucy, Sarah and Amelia did not make it easy for Keith to score.

A change in the middle made for a different paced game with the girls adjusting well to that.

Best players were Eva Manarangi and Lucy Catlin.

B Grade has finished the first half of the season undefeated with another good win against Keith.

The first quarter seemed like it was going to be a goal-for-goal game, but Penola settled well towards the end of the first with a strong seven-goal lead.

With many turnovers all over the court and very accurate shooting from both Sarah and Teegan we were able to capitalise on opportunities and extend our lead each quarter from then on.

Caitlin worked overtime defending Keith’s strong GS.

Lauren worked hard in positions all over the court providing pressure in defence and perfect leading and feeding in attack.

Ava is a vital part of our attack line with her timing and patience down court.

Jess was a pocket rocket and ran hard all game and Monique did anything asked of her and provided tight pressure all game to create many successful turnovers.

Best players were Sarah Eustace and Caitlin Eason.

A Reserve started well having an fairly even contested first quarter.

Our midcourt had to battle hard for every ball as their opponents did not make it easy to receive the ball.

A slow start in the second saw us on the back foot, unable to convert our centre passes and capitalise on defensive turnovers.

This saw us down by 11 at half time.

The third quarter saw us make a change with Kasey entering the game at GA with fresh legs.

Great ball movement from our feeders and goalies saw us narrow the margin to back to eight.

The girls came out firing in the last with great full court defensive pressure and accuracy at the post.

We capitalised on our opportunities scoring six in a row.

Unfortunately this was not quite enough to get us over the line, but only going down by four at the final whistle.

Best players were Kim Wilson and Karly Honner.

It was second versus third spot in A Grade and Penola was anticipating a tough and physical match.

The back line duo of Jordyn Adams and Brooke Klemm made it difficult for Keith’s goalies to find good range and Chelsea Galpin’s pressure outside the ring made inside entries difficult.

Penola managed to get up by as much as six goals during the first, but Keith’s zone forced the Eagles to throw some long balls and create some turnovers making the margin only three at the first break.

During the second the Eagles again had their hands in everything causing the Crows to shoot long and gain multiple rebounds.

April Possingham was in great form again and assisted in gaining a 10-goal lead at half time.

In the third Penola really started to put the foot down with the sleek ball movement between Siobhan Adams and Kaitlin Egan.

Tegan Lythgo found nice space and drew the contact well to then deliver to April under the ring and allowed the lead to extend out to 16.

Some changes were made in the last with Jordyn put to GK, Chelsea shifted across to GD and Brooke made her first appearance in WD.

Multiple turnovers were gained off some fantastic defensive efforts including Siobhan getting a couple of intercepts.

April stamped her authority netting 15/16 for the final quarter to make the Eagles biggest margin against Keith in years.

This now puts the Eagles to top spot.

Best players were Brooke Klemm and April Possingham.
