Education concern

Beachport community leader Sharon Cox is worried about the possibility of a Mount Gambier private school establishing a 170km daily round-trip bus run to transport students from the seaside to the Blue Lake city.

Councillor Cox is fearful of the impact of such a transport service on the enrolments at Beachport Primary School.

“Beachport could end up in the same boat as Tantanoola,” Cr Cox said at the October monthly meeting of Wattle Range Council.

Tantanoola Primary School closed three years ago due to a lack of enrolments as some local families were opting instead to bus their children to other population centres.

Cr Peter Dunnicliff said he had been phoned about the bus run matter by a Beachport resident.

Cr Moira Neagle said the viability of Rendelsham Primary School could also be affected while Cr Kevin McGrath said a similar case applied with Kangaroo Inn Area School.

Council chief executive Ben Gower said he would give the matter some thought and have some conservations.

“I do not meddle in private matters,” Mr Gower said.
