Faithful Red Cross service recognised

Long and faithful service to an international humanitarian organisation was recognised when the Southend Red Cross branch members recently gathered at the town’s community club for their annual Christmas Lunch.

Libby Furner, Red Cross Vice Patron and Mount Gambier staff David Walshaw and Belinda Anderson attended to present the six awards.

Millicent resident Thelma Thomas headed the list with a Long Service Award for 70 years.

She had joined the Millicent branch and transferred her membership to Southend when her home branch had gone into recess a few years ago.

Her late mother Ruth Willshire was appointed a Member of the British Empire in 1961 for her many years of service to Red Cross and other civic bodies.

Other recipients were Lidia Galli (Long Service Award for 50 years), Jillyann Herdman (10 years), Jennette Butcher (30 years), Maree Williams (10 years) and Josie Bunn (20 years).
