Footy season heats up

With the meat and drink of the 2022 Veolia Limestone Coast Women’s Football League season upon us, the pecking order is starting to take shape.

Round 6 commences tomorrow night when football returns to McLaughlin Park where players will enjoy some exposure under lights.

The home team Millicent is aiming to save its best performance of what has been a tough season so far for its supporters.

The Saints will march onto their own turf against Casterton Sandford – a side that has shown plenty of promise in 2022.

The Cats sit on the cusp of the top four and will be striving for a percentage-boosting win to ensure they loom as a finals contender.

Scarlett Jarrad has been a regular in the best players and goal scorers columns, while Sophie Arkun and Ree Humphries stepped up last week.

The Victorians will be hurting from a defeat to Mundulla where the lack of a four-quarter effort proved costly.

Mundulla will be confident of collecting back-to-back wins when it takes on the winless Kalangadoo in the night fixture.

Despite the consistent efforts of Taysha James and Kellie Wallace, the Pies have lost all five fixtures so far and face another daunting four quarters of football against Michael Hunt’s well-drilled team.

Kongorong is in the middle of its most successful women’s footy season ever and will get to host the action for the first time on Sunday.

The Hawks peaked in rounds 3 and 4 before coming back down to Earth with a heavy defeat to Penola last week.

But the prospect of facing North Gambier presents the likes of Evie Sealey and Jade Longbottom a great opportunity of singing the team song again.

However, the Tigers cannot be underestimated with the side feeling pumped up for its first win in four games.

North played a positive brand of football to overcome Kalangadoo where the run and carry of Dianne Wilson was decisive.

But before the home side takes to the field on Sunday afternoon, fans will get to enjoy the match of the round.

With South Gambier a run-away leader at the top, Kybybolite and Penola are locked in a fight for second which could be decided by the result of their Sunday morning clash.

The Eagles are yet to drop a game thanks to the fine efforts of Angela Broad, Paris Ackland and Caroline McGrath, while Kyby has also shown its hand.

Last year’s Grand Finalists have shown no mercy, but their run of wins was brought to a halt by the unstoppable South Gambier.

But thanks to Sophie Henschke, Kybybolite became the first team to score a point against the Demons and will be determined to prove there are still the reigning premier’s number-one challenger by overcoming the new kid in town.
