Former club champ secures round win

Former Club Champion Phil Bliss was Thursday’s winner after a fine 41 points at the Mount Gambier Golf Club.

Bliss had an indifferent front nine of 17 points before kicking into gear on the back with a square with the card 36 off the stick and 24 points with two birdies and two bogeys.

Patrick O’Donnell continues his recent run of form to post 40 points.

This was a one over par 73 off the stick for the five marker with a very steady 3 birdie, 4 bogey round as he continues to head towards a scratch handicap.

Three players Peter Emetlis, Sullivan Moryn and Terry Janeway all tied on 37 points with Richard Gosling, Mark Teakle and Graham Greenwood all posted 36 points.

The ball rundown extended to 34 points with Gordon Bignell snaring the last one.

Nearest the pins went to Peter Waters on the 8th and Phil Bliss on the 16th, with both players managing to roll in their putts for a birdie two.

Peter Gardner and club captain Peter Waters both posted the rounds of the day in Saturday’s monthly medal, turning in nett 68s.

Once again the arbitrary sword of count-back was used to declare Gardner the winner of the medal.

Gardner won C Grade by two strokes from Don Coulter on nett 70 and Stephen Stott a further stroke back on 71.

In A Grade it was Waters who enjoyed the $40 winner’s cheque if not the medal from Roger Davis and O’Donnell both on nett 69.

Club pro John Martin posted a two bogey, two birdie, one eagle, 70 off the stick, for fourth place.

In B Grade John Maxwell and Darren Turner tied on nett 71 with Maxwell rejoicing in the count-back system to claim the win.

Turner left to rue a double bogey on the last.

Jason Millhouse with a nett 72 claimed third place.

It was an excellent field on Saturday with 113 players greeting the starter and the balls being paid down to nett 76 and Sam Letizia grabbing the last one.

Nearest the pins went to Balaklava Golf Club visitor Peter Friedrichs on the 8th and Nick Moretti on the 16th.

Unfortunately neither player was able to roll their putt in for a birdie.
