Former school on open market

The closed Tantanoola Primary School is on the open market more than three years after its manual bell was rung for the last time.

It is being marketed by a Mount Gambier firm for an undisclosed price.

Tantanoola lost its school and child parent centre at the end of 2019 due to a lack of enrolments.

The extensive grounds and buildings have been well maintained ever since including the modern gymnasium which is almost the size of a basketball court.

It is only around 12 years old and its $930,000 price tag was funded by the Rudd Federal Labor Government as part of the nation-wide economic stimulus package called Building the Education Revolution.

Tantanoola Primary School was founded in 1881 with some of the original buildings still in use at the time of its closure.

At its peak, the student enrolment exceeded 100.

Among the distinguished old scholars were Australian netballer Jane Altschwager, State Premier Des Corcoran and academic Professor Neil Warren.

Late decorated airman Kingsley Pryor (D.F.C.) spent his early years living at the school.

Mr Pryor was born in Millicent on October 18, 1921 but his time in this town was relatively short.

At this time, his father was midway through a four-year term as the headmaster of Tantanoola Primary School.

Mr Pryor studied at Roseworthy Agricultural College prior to World War II and enlisted at age of 20 in 1942.

For his efforts as a navigator/bomb-aimer over Europe, he was promoted to the rank of Flying Officer and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (D.F.C.).

Meanwhile, the former St Clare’s Catholic Church at Tantanoola is set to change hands for just the second time in 140 years.

The town’s heritage-listed railway station is also being restored by the Tantanoola Progress Association.
