Fringe performers bring extra splash of colour to Wulanda

Fringe Mount Gambier descended onto the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre on Sunday with a Fringe Pool Party.

The city’s new community space was filled with quirky and wildly fabulous Fringe artists enjoying the facilities, and interacting with pool goers and staff.

Artistic director Louise Adams said the event was welcomed by all.

“The concept was to bring Fringe into Wulanda, with incredible costumes Fringe artists and performance interspersed amongst the normal activities of our wonderful new recreation centre,” she said.

“We wanted it to be surprising and unusual, for patrons to be going about their normal activities, then be intrigued and amazed by the art going on around them!

“Wulanda is already many things to so many in the community, and Fringe really wanted to demonstrate how versatile this space is and will become.

“These spaces can evolve with us, and enrich our community as we explore how to use them.”

Visiting performance artists The Bait Fridge were the feature artists for the event.

Running with the theme Into The Deep Blue, The Bait Fridge expanded their concept from Fringeland and descended into the pools as imaginative sea creatures and water elements.

“They created a lot of intrigue and delight with patrons,” Ms Adams said.

“The psychedelic soundscape added to the whole experience – it was calming and exciting all in one.”

The Bait Fridge’s Henry Jock Walker said it was a fantastic experience.

“The Wulanda Pool Party experience was an aquatic haven for our bait family, Georgia Oatley And Banjo Jackson played some fruity tunes while the rest of the bait team clad in variations of neoprene costume explored movement and getting to know the young locals,” he said.

“It was a very fun space to explore creatively, we would love to do it again bigger and better.”

Ms Adams said the event also featured cabaret artists.

“Big Balloon Girl even made an appearance to provide performances for patrons,” she said.

“Seeing a woman in a giant balloon in the middle of the pool centre was a sight to see.”

Wulanda Recreational and Convention Centre centre manager Jason Taylor said it was a fantastic event at the new facility which attracted 60 people.

“We look forward to having even more Fringe events in the future,” he said.

“It went really well, there has been only positive feedback.

“It was going to be outdoors in the 50-metre pool area, but we did it in the indoor aquatic pool.”
