Fundraising movie magic

The Lions Club of Blue Lake City Lionesses’ Downton Abbey: A New Era movie night at the Oatmill Cinema last week raised more than $1500 for the Lions Flood Relief.

The premiere screening saw 150 guests attend with a lot of people dressing in the 1920s theme and vintage dresses on display reminiscent of the movie era.

Rosemary Carter dazzled as the best dressed female, Grant Harrington took out the best dressed male category and Alex Jaukoff won the lucky seat prize.

Club president Beryl Mahoney said the club had not been able to host a movie night fundraiser for three years due to COVID-19.

“We thought this film would be a great chance to dress up and it appeals to a diverse audience,” she said.

“We do lots of different fundraisers, but we thought a movie night was something a bit different we have not done for a long time.

“It gives people the opportunity to sit back and relax amid such a busy time with COVID.

“The Downtown Abbey era spurred us on to do something because we love the era and the fun of getting dressed up.

“We would like to thank the community for supporting this event and we look forward to putting on more fundraisers throughout the year.”
