Gala Day tradition remains

Gala Day tradition remains

An important date on the Millicent calendar for hundreds of young footballers and netballers falls on Sunday.

Players and spectators will gather at McLaughlin Park and keep alive a tradition which began in the early 1970s at Tantanoola.

Re-named the Millicent District Gala Day in 2013, the event organisers are members of McLaughlin Park Sports Incorporated (MPSI).

It starts at 9am with netball and football competitions for primary school students from around the region.

In all, there will be six football teams and 18 netball teams competing from as far away as Robe.

As before, smaller schools from across the region will field combined football and netball teams.

Footballers compete for the prestigious Con Brown Memorial Shield which honours the memory of the late Tantanoola footballer.

From its earliest days, organisers have stated the Gala Day carnival depends on its success by the involvement of many people including schools, coaches, parents and the young players while fun and participation are the aims.

MPSI draws its members from the football, netball, tennis, cricket, soccer and basketball clubs and associations which use McLaughlin Park.

Gate fees of $5 per vehicle apply and funds are also raised by sales from catering and the proceeds of a raffle.

The Gala Day is scheduled to finish with presentations at 3pm.
