Golf club tradition continues

The Thursday four ball better ball competition is one of the long-standing traditions at the Mount Gambier Golf Club and isalways a highly sought-after trophy that comes with a year’s worth of bragging rights.

Max Tollner and Jeff Hodge will be the ones ‘bending people’s ears’ as the duo claimed event honours on Thursday with a fantastic score of 12 up.

They required the assistance of countback though with the unlucky McGregor and Norman also posting 12 up.

Saturday’s event was a stableford round with beautiful weather greeting the players.

Sam Letizia had the round of the day with 41 points which equates to a 75 off the stick for the eight handicapper and was enough to win the A Grade first prize by two from Bryce Whicker on 39 points.

In B Grade Gordon Bignell posted 37 points to win by two from Shayne Hosking on 35.

In C Grade Stephen Stott was blessed arbitrarily by countback to claim first place from Don Coulter after both players had 34 points.

The ball rundown extended to 32 points with Darren Earle securing the last one.

Nearest the pin on the 8th went to Bob Dalgano and Prajogo Shanahan on the 16th with only Dalgarno able to convert his chance for a birdie two.

Sunday’s golfers took to the course in search of the prestigious South East Open 36 hole event with local player Jake Laubsch a first time winner.

The field used a ‘shotgun start’ at 7:30am for round one and after a quick lunch took to the course for the second round.

The weather was perfect for golf and the course was in excellent condition with greens firm and putts running true.

After the mornings round, Laubsch was three strokes behind leader and former South East open day winner Darren Bilney.

Bilney posted 73 to lead Mark Pretty by a stroke and Anthony Williams David Lightbody and Adam Somerfield by two.

Laubsch made up for his indifferent morning round with a blistering front nine in the afternoon, shooting a four under 32 and arriving home with two birdies and two bogeys to shoot 36 on the back.

His 68/76 total of 144 was enough to claim the trophy by three from Anthony Williams and Adam Somerfield both on 148 after matching 73’s in the afternoon.

Round one leader Bilney recorded a 76 in the afternoon and finished fourth outright with 149.

Jeffery Hodge won the nett 36 hole event with a pair of 73’s to continue his good form.

Hodge playing off nine had two rounds of 82 to claim first prize by count back from an unlucky Stephen Easterbrook also on nett 146.
