Group rolls out cancer support

The Mount Gambier Hospital and Cancer SA are to share in almost $30,000 worth of grants from the Millicent Cancer Support Group.

The beneficiaries were decided at the charity’s recent annual general meeting at the Somerset Hotel.

Cancer SA has received $7000 towards research as well as a similar amount for its Greenhill Lodge accommodation facility in Adelaide for cancer patients undergoing treatment.

The hospital will be able to purchase a $2800 treatment couch as well as a $10,500 portable ultrasound machine.

The treatment couch is a three section all electric bed which will benefit both patients and nursing staff utilising it.

The purchase of a handheld ultrasound machine will benefit medical oncology/cancer care team in numerous clinical ways.

Office-holders for the coming 12 months are unchanged and the Millicent Cancer Support Group will continue to be led by Lisa McCourt (president), Angela Leopold (vice-president), Janine Holding and Linda Stark (joint secretaries) and Karla Werchon (treasurer).

In her annual report, Ms McCourt said the Millicent Cancer Support Group has been able to donate $15,000 to the Family Room at the Millicent Hospital and a further $2004 for a chair for that room.

“We paid for one recovery chair at the Millicent Hospital costing $3400 using a donation from the Beachport and Rivoli Bay Lions Club and are waiting for the second chair to arrive which will cost us $3400,” Ms McCourt said.

“The Christmas gifts to the Mount Gambier Oncology/Chemotherapy Unit have been sent.

“I think we need to give ourselves a pat on the back.

“Our community is always generous and we depend on them to help us fundraise but it is our committee that turns up to work, who go out and ask for donations, come up with ideas and go out and make it happen.

“We can be proud.”

Millicent Cancer Support Group members recently assisted with the staging of a charity golf day at the Millicent Golf Club.

They also accepted a cheque for $10,200 as its third share of the proceeds of the inaugural 5280 Charity Ball in Millicent.

The 5280 Charity Ball was an initiative of South East Property Sales and Management and the other beneficiaries were the Wattle Range Hospital Auxiliary and the Royal Flying Doctor Service Millicent Support Group.
