Heavy hit investigated

Police are investigating a hit and run collision which damaged a Mount Gambier business on Friday night.

About 7pm a car crashed into the front of the Tough Fit Gym on Elizabeth Street, causing damage to the wall.

A SAPOL spokeswoman said the vehicle had left the scene prior to police arrival.

“Investigations are continuing and anyone who witnessed this incident or has dashcam or phone footage that may assist the investigation is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au,” she said.

Tough Fit Gym owner Scott Thomas was relieved no one was injured inside the building.

“We’re very relieved no one was training in the gym and particularly that corner of the building/weight rack when the accident occurred,” he said.

“Any other night of the week the gym would be full of people and the outcome very, very different.”

Mr Thomas praised the emergency services crews who were quick to respond.

“Hats off to emergency service crews who arrived within minutes and worked until almost midnight, securing the building, cleaning up and making it safe so we could run our early morning training sessions on Saturday as planned,” he said.

Mr Thomas said the damage bill was still being determined, with insurance assessors to inspect the scene.
