The 15th High Wheeler ‘Gathering’ has rolled into Mount Gambier this week for their biannual event.
They meet in a different state every two years but last year’s trip to the Blue Lake city was postponed due to COVID-19.
The buggies will drive down Commercial Street travelling west today and Thursday at 9.30am for the public to view the historical automobiles.
Their program includes a Murray Langford truck restoration workshop and visits to the Limestone Coast Quarry, Coola Station, Glenelg River, Nelson Airfield, Port MacDonnell and Buckley’s Potato Enterprise.
Program organiser Colin Thompson said the age of the “marvellous pieces of automotive history” range from the 1907 to 1915 period.
“They are really just buggies with a primitive internal combustion engine attached, two speeds, a reverse and very little brakes,” he said.
“There are 10 I.H.C. buggies, 2 Schacht, 2 McIntyres, 1 Black and 1 Kiblinger.
“They are mostly USA made and the I.H.C is made by the International Harvester Company.
“They will be out and about on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday drivers and passengers are travelling by modern cars to Nelson due to safety concerns with the old buggies on the road.”
