History group talks resume at Millicent

Monthly history talks have recently resumed in Millicent at the research centre of the South East Family History Group.

The group hosted Millicent resident Nigel MacLennan as its first guest speaker, who spoke about the restoration and operation by fellow enthusiasts of the historic Farina Bakery in Outback South Australia.

Mr MacLennan was born into a notable post-war Millicent baking family and the restoration has also captured the imagination of his brothers Doug and Martin MacLennan

The three MacLennans with their baking background have been an invaluable source of assistance.

They aim to visit Farina each year.

As well as the bakery, volunteers have been working since 2009 to restore other structures at the old township such as fences and buildings

Millicent residents Dean and Louise Tompkins are interested SEFHG members and they had recently offered to be volunteers at Farina.

However, their plans were thwarted when COVID intervened but they still plan to join the many volunteers at a later date.

Meanwhile, the easing of some COVID restrictions means the Wednesday and Saturday research sessions at the SEFHG are now being held each week.
