Hundreds head to Bay for dawn service

The Port MacDonnell Anzac Day dawn service was well attended this year with almost 500 people attending the Port MacDonnell and District RSL Memorial.

The Kingsley Group CFS cadets were overrun with people while they were providing breakfast in the Port MacDonnell Community Hall for a small fee as part of their fundraising efforts.

Bridie McPherson spoke about her late grandfather Wayne Manser while Fiona Tilley spoke about her late father John Tilley, which was well received.

Grant District Council 2022 Young Citizen of the Year Elivia Stanley spoke about what Anzac Day means for the younger generation.

The Allendale East Area School Choir led by Lucy Ridley sang ‘Spirit of the Anzacs’ and Linda Driver performed the national anthem.

Port MacDonnell Anzac Day Organising Group member Richard Ferguson said it was a successful ceremony.

“I think the people of Port MacDonnell and district really appreciate having the service still going,” he said.

“The service itself went very well, there were a couple of girls who spoke about their grandfather and father.

“There was a comment they were most touched that young people were involved, and it was a personal touch.

“The flyover by Harvey McBain happened right at the end of the service and it was very well received, just a bit of a highlight and I think the way he flew the plane he was enjoying it too.

“Overall it was fantastic, there was a lot of great feedback from local people who really enjoyed it.”
