Junior stars come out at night

Vansittart Park was the place to be Friday night for round 4 of the Limestone Coast Women’s football league under 16 competition.

The North Tigers kicked off proceedings against the Kyby Tigers and even though the score showed a comfortable win to the home team the visitors were gallant in their game play.

The Tigers showed pure strength starting from the middle with Penny Coleman giving her teammates Luca Roulstone and Yenna Joyce first use of the ball.

This continued with the home side running rings around Kyby with great football and constant pressure, not allowing Kyby to get a game plan going.

North dominated the game while Kyby battled hard with Stella O’Brien using her height across the backline but it was North that continued to score, holding the opposition scoreless and going into the first break with a 23 point lead.

A revved up Kyby team burst into the second quarter and looked to be a bit more focused on the task at hand, but from the ball up North got the center clearance through Coleman and it was Roulstone who got the kick away to attack the goals.

The strong defence of Kyby’s Summer Batchelor repelled many attacks from the home team, well supported by Zara East.

Play was very tough in the second term, and this showed on the scoreboard with both teams only kicking minor scores.

North managed to hold on to the lead and extend it out to 26 points at the main break.

In the third quarter North put their heads down and put on an exhibition led by Roulstone, Coleman, and Georgia Gentile who all made the possession count and contributed to the score.

Kyby dug deep as well and played some great football, with Amelia Frank pulling out all stops to lift her team.

North still had a comfortable 43-point lead at the last break.

The last quarter was all North’s way with the Kyby team slowly running out of legs and unable to maintain pressure on the home team.

This let the trio of Roulstone, Heidi Berkin and Joyce run free and control the play and the Kyby team had no answer.

North took the win by 55 points with best players Gentile, Berkin, Joyce and Coleman, while for Kyby it was Frank, Batchelor, East and Mia McCarthy.

The second match of the night saw the Demons up against the Hawks, with both teams itching to get the win on the board and cement a spot in the top three on the ladder.

Coming off a bye last week the Hawks were all ready to go, while the Demons were coming off a good win in round three.

The Hawks’ intentions were clear from the ball up with Becky Duivenvoorde giving her smalls first use of the ball and it was Evie Sealey on her trusty left foot that got a clearing kick away to the center half forward position where the Demons’ tough Bailey Broome created a ball up.

The ball did not go far from this contest and it was only another 10 meters away where the ball was wrapped up in a good tackle by the Hawks.

After the second contest close to the Hawks’ goal, a quick kick resulted in the first major score registered on the scoreboard.

It was back to the center and a ruck contest saw the Demons get the touch and kick towards their forward line and answer with a quick reply to even the scores early in the piece.

But it was another clearance from the center that allowed the Hawks to move the ball into attack and peppered the goals to score and go to the first change five points in front.

The second quarter went the way of the Demons with good pressure applied to the Hawks, who found themselves fumbling and not putting their heads over the ball.

The Demons pushed on with Jarrah Altschwager and Isabella Morello leading the way.

Despite the Demons having all the play they only managed to score eight behinds, although they held their opposition scoreless, going into the main break with a two point lead.

The third term was better for last season’s premiers when Jasmin McKinnon started to find the ball and Lilly Gordon got in and under the packs to clear the ball out.

This was countered by the Demons’ Ella Guest who showed dash off the half back line while Sophie Longbottom was good in the back half for the Hawks.

The Demons still held the upper hand at three-quarter time with a three-point lead.

In the last term the Demons knuckled down and kicked three goals to the Hawks’ one point with plenty of wet weather football on display.

The Hawks found themselves flat footed in the term with the Demons powering on and winning by 21 points.

Better players for the Demons were Altschwager, Morello and Tilly Salmon and the Hawks named Gordon, Cedar Scott and Jordy Heraper.
