League leaders put Pioneers to test

The OneFortyOne Pioneers are set to face their biggest challenge of the season thus far, when another storm hits town tomorrow night.

The Pioneers will host the Keilor Thunder in a battle of two of the NBL1 South conference’s top sides.

The round 4 match has the home side, currently sitting in fourth on the ladder, up against the top side.

OneFortyOne Pioneers captain Isabella Brancatisano said her side was preparing for a tough challenge tomorrow night.

Brancatisano issued a rallying call for Pioneers fans to fill the stands to support their home team.

“Friday is a really tough one for us, we are playing Keilor,” she said.

“They are undefeated as well, they have a lot of WNBL players, we will need the fans here.

“The fans help so we hope everyone gets down here on Friday.”

Head coach Matt Sutton echoed his captain’s thoughts, declaring his side would be in for a tough match against Keilor.

“They are the number one team at the moment sitting 6-0, they have awesome depths of talent and we will be up against it this week,” he said.

“They have Maddi Rocci, who is pushing for the Opals squad for the Olympics, Issy Bourne who is one of the brightest stars in you see in the WNBL and who is an established WNBL player and had a lot of success at that level and has represented New Zealand.

“They also have Tera Reed who is another New Zealand player and is an established WNBL player, plus a couple of young players who have been part of the WNBL as
well.

“They are deep with talent and well coached.

“I think both teams match up reasonably well and we are seeing if we can put a plan together to give ourselves a shot.”

Sutton said his side was building momentum and continuing to gel as the season progressed.

“On Friday night Issa had a fantastic game, we had players who popped in and out of doing some good things, we also found there were some standards we did not hold and we need to be a bit better with as we go along,” he said.

The match will tip off at 6pm at the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre.
