Lions Club shows pride in volunteer

Aspecial presentation to Millicent resident Lorraine Hyland was one of the high points at the recent dinner of the Millicent Lions Club.

Ms Hyland was named the service club’s volunteer of the year for 2022 at the function at the Somerset Hotel.

Club president Richard North described her many fields of interest.

Mr North said she was a Millicent Visitor Information Centre volunteer for over a decade.

“Ms Hyland welcomed visitors to the town and the district by providing assistance and information to many tourists and countless visitors,” Mr North said.

“She was a key figure among the group of volunteers who were involved at the time, and was responsible for much of the day to day running of the centre.

“Her volunteer focus then moved to the Millicent Public Library about six years ago where she continues to regularly work, along with others, in the Bruce Towers History Room.

“The commendable local collection of historic memorabilia is very much a result of the work of people like Ms Hyland who sort, sift, catalogue and enter into digital form, much of the history of our town and region.

“Ms Hyland has also been the Millicent Bowling Club’s kitchen catering coordinator in recent years.

“This involves coordination of catering for both regular bowling club days as well as special events at the club house.

“In the world of craft, Ms Hyland is a keen patchwork quilter.

“She teaches others and has had involvement in quilt displays for the Geltwood festival over the years.”

Mr North said the Lions award recipient also finds time to volunteer as a member of the Millicent Health Advisory Council and coordinator of Meals on Wheels.

“It is understandable that she has also been a member of the original Lioness club and the now Lions Club of Wattle Range Lioness,” he said.

“This award is about recognising and making public the volunteering of people whose involvement would be clearly missed if they were not members of our community.

“Through her willingness to help out, give of her time, and make a difference, Ms Hyland is a very worthy recipient of the Millicent Lions Club Volunteer of the Year award.”
