The Lions Club of Penola recently hosted the Lions Skin Cancer Screening Unit.
Co-ordinator Mike Matuschka said despite the wet, cold and windy weather the weekend was a success.
Mr Matuschka said 105 people were screened, with 49 men and 56 women.
“Of this number 40 had never been screened before, and 18 were referred to their doctor for further investigation,” he said.
“A reasonable number travelled from Mount Gambier, Millicent and Naracoorte.
“The truck, van, equipment and staff are a joint C1 and C2 Lions Districts project, and they cover all of South Australia and Northern Territory.
“The staff are retired medical personnel – doctors and nurses.
“A big thank you to the Foodland supermarket who gave us permission to use their carpark and toilet facilities.
“The van was clearly visible to all who drove past or came into the carpark.
“President Ray towed our Driver Reviver van to the site, and this gave us a welcome place to shelter from the wind and rain while collecting the necessary paperwork.”
Mr Matuschka said the screening team had advised the waiting time between booking a visit and the actual visit was a minimum of 18 months.
“They are still trying to catch up after COVID interrupted proceedings,” he said.
“They have not long returned from Kangaroo Island and Robe.
“Later in the month they will be travelling to towns in the northern part of Eyre Peninsula.”
