Matthews celebrates ton

Glencoe cricketer Jed Matthews achieved every batsman’s dream with a career-best unbeaten knock of 127 at home on Saturday.

Batting at number three, Matthews was seldom troubled by the Gambier Centrals team as his side completed its 70 allocated overs at 7/312.

It was his first “ton” in senior company for the 20-year-old.

The Murphies are well-placed to take the points in the Crouch Shield encounter in the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association when the match resumes on Saturday.

Matthews had been called to the crease early on as the opening partnership of 16 runs was broken in only the seventh over.

His intentions were obvious from the get-go as his second scoring shot was a boundary.

In all, Matthews reached the boundary on 14 occasions while three of his clean hits cleared the fence.

A willing partner was veteran batsman Tory Weaver who batted at second drop.

He smashed 15 fours and three sixes but fell on 95 when he was trapped leg before wicket.
