McLaughlin Park to host ‘works party’

AMillicent venue will host one of South Australia’s biggest works picnics next month.

McLaughlin Park will host the Kimberly-Clark Australia Millicent Mill Social Club Christmas party on December 11.

Despite losing a significant number of workers 11 years ago, the yearly event is still one of the largest functions of its type in the state.

It has been held at McLaughlin Park for almost three decades and features music, food, a visit by Father Christmas and novelty rides and entertainments provided by the Showmen’s Guild of South Australia.

Meanwhile, the milestone celebrations for Millicent’s largest employer have been temporarily put on hold.

The American owner of the Kimberly-Clark Australia Millicent Mill marked its 150th anniversary on October 22.

It was founded at Neenah, Wisconsin, USA and the company gave a $150,000 donation to the school in that city to mark the occasion.

It was business as usual for its 400 employees and contractors at Millicent on the actual anniversary date.

“We are very proud of our 150 years, 62 in Millicent and plans are currently under way to celebrate this milestone later this year,” a KCA spokesperson said.

Established by two Australian firms, the Millicent Mill began operations in 1960 and the Kimberly-Clark Corporation of the USA took a 50% stake in the plant three years later.

Full American ownership of the Millicent Mill occurred in 2002.
