Millicent show lights the night

Crowds flocked to the Millicent Show on the weekend, making the most of the spring sunshine.

The absence of the popular motocross action on Friday night did not heavily impact on gate-takings at the 145th annual event, according to organisers.

The change of drawcard event on Friday night and sunshine was a welcome relief across all three days which helped keep the number of ticket sales up.

Accurate gate-takings have not yet been made available but show spokesperson Sue Vanderheul said overall the committee was extremely happy.

The committee is already looking ahead to 2023 and based on the success of the speed shearing competition on Friday night are hoping to introduce a bigger and better event.

“We are hoping to have both sports shearing and speed shearing. One on the Friday night and one on the Saturday,” Ms Vanderheul said.

“At this stage we are just putting ideas out there. We are looking at having the motocross return and then shearing afterwards.”

Organisers were pleased to be able to showcase live footage of events on a video big screen, while exhibits and entertainment returned.

There was no shortage or excitement for thrill seekers, with rides including the Sizzler, Extreme Thriller, Kamikaze, Skydiver and Hard Rock.

Spectacular fireworks lit up the Gordon Memorial Oval and showgrounds for 15 minutes on Friday night.

Jim Garner’s iconic long running demo derby again drew the crowd to the main outdoor arena, as did the lawnmower racing held adjacent.

The primary industries of the Millicent district were represented in the yard dogs, sheep, wool, poultry and cattle competitions.

The trade exhibitors included local service clubs and eateries also showcased their food and beverages.

There were a range of special exhibits throughout the grounds, including unique vehicles and stationary engines, a junior show person competition and live entertainment including Jason and Christie Wallace and Circus Elements.

Horses-in-action was the only competition to be staged over all three days and coincided with the Millicent Showgrounds Markets on Sunday.

The market made the most of the sunshine as the hall was occupied by indoor exhibits.

Ms Vanderheul said the market will again coincide with the show weekend next year.

“This year we had 10 stalls, so the committee is hoping to increase the number of traders next year,” she said.
