It’s time to dust off the fur cloaks and polish up the viking horns, as the Fantasy Medieval Fair takes over the Mount Gambier Showgrounds this weekend.

The two day immersive experience won Community Event of the Year at the Australia Day awards, and promises an even bigger program in 2023.

Crowd favourites such as the longbow archery and D&D games return, as well as an expanded horse jousting program and the Warhounds armoured combat arena featuring an Origin state of the steel competition between SA and Victoria.

There will also be performances from the Mount Gambier Calisthenics Club, plays by the Mount Gambier Theatre group, the Maypole Highland dancers, spinning and weaving demonstrations and the Last Choir joining the musical lineup which also features harpist Siobhan Owen.

Kids will love the traditional Punch and Judy show, the sand castle creation station, patting miniature donkeys and goats and creating their own treasure maps.

While adults will enjoy the variety on offer in the tavern area including medieval themed ales and meads, mulled wines and more.

Event co-organiser Tammy Flier said merchants were coming from around Australia to offer up unique wares in the medieval marketplace which included local artisans such as DragonSteel and Leather and Fiona Bastian designs.

“The event is run by a team of experienced and dedicated volunteers,” she said.

“We’re so excited to bring a large-scale event of this kind that is a little bit outside the norm and appeals to a wide audience.

“From history lovers to fantasy roleplayers and everyone with an imagination, the Fantasy Medieval Fair has something for you to enjoy.

“And if the fair is not enough, then join us for the adults only Medieval Feast on Saturday night.

“Presented by SE Marquees Weddings and Events the fair includes a three course hearty meal and medieval themed entertainment, with themed drinks available.”

Gates open at 10am to 4pm and while costumes are not mandatory, they are encouraged with costume competitions taking place throughout each day.
