The Mackillop Farm Management Group held its annual Livestock field day in Lucindale last week.

This year’s theme was “fire and beyond” focussing on the recent Australian bushfires through a livestock perspective including individual experiences and the importance of a fire plan.

The event was well attended by 78 producers, growers, and industry representatives.

Eight guest speakers highlighted a variety of topics including farmer and mental health advocate Ben Brooksby from The Naked Farmer, which was a highlight for Livestock and Pastures Committee member Scott Harlock.

“Ben Brooksby helped to reduce the stigma associated with mental health by talking about it, bringing the importance of mental health to the forefront of people’s minds,” Mr Harlock said.

“Ben helped remind people they need to look after their mental health

and take time away from their businesses if needed.”

Mr Brooksby told the attendees that in 2019, there were 3318 suicide deaths in Australia equating to nine people per day, six of which were men.

In comparison there were 1195 road crash deaths experienced that same year creating a three to one ratio in terms of suicide to road crash deaths yet “more emphasis is placed on road crashes then there is on suicide”.

“Ben mentioned these frightening statistics, giving everyone something to think about and emphasising the significance of looking after not only yourself but your friends and family,” Mr Harlock said.

“These events do not just occur so I would like to thank CEO of the Mackillop Farm Management Group Meg Bell and communication and events officer Meghan Skeer for all their hard work.

“It was a day enjoyed by all those attended and as always we look forward to next year’s event.”
