MGNA Round 1 wrap

ZODIACS

13B – Our team came up against a very tall side, which proved challenging for our girls. Every player worked really hard at working to get in front of their players. We look forward to developing their skills throughout the season.

13A – It was a great start to the season for the 13A side. Zodiacs found their rhythm and delivered great passages of play. Saints came out hard into the second half and both teams had to fight for every possession. Zodiacs held on and the game ended in a draw. It was a brilliant display of junior netball and an exciting preview of the season ahead.

U15 – What an amazing start to the season. Our GA and GS were on fire and dominated. Our mid court was strong and possessed the ball well, while our defenders were amazing. Can’t wait for the season ahead.

U17 – It was a fantastic start by the under 17s, coming out of the gates with a convincing win over Intruders. The team worked well with some versatile changes.

B2 – Zodiacs defeated Hobitz 48-12

The girls worked well together as a team, defending hard and attacking where it was needed. They used the space on the court and were able to read the play and intercept passes to walk away with the win.

B1 – It was a warm start to the season with a very even first half. The third quarter saw us edge ahead and build a comfortable margin. There was great shooting from both teams but our experience held up and ended up with the win.

A Grade – It was a very tough first game for the season for the A grade girls against a very strong and experienced Hobitz side. However, the girls had some good passages of play and there were definitely positives to take away from the game. They are a great group of girls with lots of potential and we can’t wait to see in the coming weeks how much they will improve and bond together as a team.

INTRUDERS

A Grade – Intruders commenced the first game of the season with great enthusiasm, and soon found themselves playing a tough, fast-paced contesting game against Saints. Intruders held the lead until the last quarter where an opposition turnaround saw them go down by 10 at the final whistle.

A2 – In perfect weather, Intruders A2 showed we have much on offer this season. Diana Bradbury celebrated her 100th game, working tirelessly with Lauren Harris to take many intercepts in and out of the circle. Our diverse midcourt never stopped, with great driving and feeding from Tahlia Reed. New to the team, Jasmine Reed applied strong defensive tactics and read the play well. Goalies Emalee Stokker and Amity Sheedy had plenty of movement and great plays to finish in a winning position. This team has a great season ahead.

B1 Orange – Intruders Orange always knew the first game of the 2024 season was going to be tough especially when matched against our other Intruders side. The team fought hard for the ball through the whole game and unfortunately ended up with a loss for the season opener.

B1 Black – Playing together for the first time, Intruders Black gelled quickly and the game flowed seamlessly. Each player knew what they had to do and displayed a great team mentality. It was always going to be tough coming up against the other Intruders side and we played our own game where each player gave their all to come away with the win.

B2 – A new group of girls who had never played together before was always going to have a shaky start to the game. Down by three at half time, we tried out some different combinations and dug deep to come away with the win. A massive team effort to everyone on the court and a big congratulations to Amy Mashford on marking 50 club games.

17U – Despite a strong opposition, Intruders fought hard from first to final whistle. If persistence and determination won games, we would have come out on top. This is such a strong skill to have from round one – expect this team to only get better as the season progresses.

15U – Intruders U15 started the season with a 7-goal win over Hobitz. Lots of promising skills were seen throughout the court, with some veteran U15s from last year mixing well with players moving up a grade, as well as those new to netball altogether.

13A – Intruders U13A played Hobitz in the first game of 2024. The team played an exceptional game and worked well together. Intruders won convincingly with a final score of 36-7, a great way to head into the season. Player of the week was awarded to P Chapman and best players went to C Lock and M Martin.

13B – The Under 13Bs played an excellent game against Hobitz coming out strong and walking away with a 13-11 win. Everyone worked hard on their footwork, while being encouraged to also just have fun playing.

AMAZONS

A Grade – Amazons 37 def by Vicis 40 – This new look A grade side took to the court against an unfamiliar Vicis line-up. It was a tight physical contest with both teams bringing the heat.

Bailey, Chrystal and Sarah moved swiftly around the circle, continuous making space and creating opportunities for each other.

Emma, Tilly and Amanda worked tirelessly to transition the ball to our attacking end. They worked off each other to provide space and backed up around the circle edge.

Lucy and Jayme teamed up in defence. They worked hard to shut down their opponents, taking some excellent intercepts and rebounds.

Not the result we wanted but the girls fought hard to the end, never giving up and showing just what they will be capable of this season.

A2 grade – Amazons 78 def Vicis 23 – What a great start to the season girls! As a newly formed team, we went out there with a positive attitude, focussed on giving it a go and having fun without putting too much pressure on ourselves. From the moment we stepped onto the court, to the moment we finished, we put in a strong effort and it took us no time at all to find our flow.

Alisha and Sarah moved effortlessly in goals, reading each other and scoring their goals. Bethany and Bailey worked hard in WA, feeding into the goal circle and backing up on the ring.

Kalli was a consistent force in C throughout the game, reading the play and maintaining a strong drive throughout the court.

Tammy was a powerhouse in WD, denying the attack, intercepting the ball and putting pressure on their attack. Eyk and Rachael were a united force in the defence circle. They got numerous rebounds, intercepts and put pressure both over the ball and their opponent.

We put in a strong effort from start to finish and the score was proof of this.

B1 grade – Amazons 13 def by Saints Black 42 – The B1 ladies first game was a hard battle in the heat. As a very new team this season, we made plenty of changes during the game to trial various combinations and set game plays.

Throughout the match, we had some very successful and dynamic plays from both ends and know that we will continue build from this strongly throughout the season.

All in all, we are extremely proud of our efforts and are excited for the season ahead. Best players for this week were Cindy Jennings and Bethany Hille.

B2 grade – Amazons 31 def by Saints 46 – B2 girls started out really strong with their first game against Saints. We had great work in the goal circle with Kalina and Heidi working well and providing accuracy in their shots. Georgia and Lauren worked well bringing the ball down and creating space. Amy worked hard in defence starting at WD and then changing to GD to finish the game – a new position for her. Ev and Kiara worked well in defence, putting pressure on Saints goalies.

Half time saw changes with Missy at WA and Roxy at WD. Roxy came through with some really good intercepts and attacked the ball, while Missy created space to bring the ball down and made sure she was always in space. We made changes in the last quarter and brought Monique in at WD and she applied pressure on the WA.

A fantastic first game for the girls. Best player vouchers went to Kalina Watts and Amy Merrett.

U15 grade – Amazons 17 def by Saints 43 – The first game of the season was a tough one for Amazons 15U side as we lined up to face Saints. The girls fought hard to the end and we saw some glimpses of what they are capable of achieving this season.

Maya, Ava and Cieerah worked hard in the attack end to lose their opponents. They moved the ball around looking for space and worked the ball in for a safer shot. They were backed up by Jolee and Libby who led hard throughout the mid-court.

Skye, Scarlett and Lauren toiled away in defence. They worked tirelessly to shut down their player and took some amazing intercepts and rebounds.

The girls never gave up and kept pushing to the final whistle. Best player vouchers went to Lauren (Wendys) and Libby (Donut King).

U13B grade – Amazons 13 def Zodiacs 5 – Round 1 of the MGNA season saw under 13B Amazons take on Zodiacs.

From the first centre pass intercept Amazons impressed with great teamwork securing the first goal of the match.

Standouts were Nina in goal attack, with outstanding shooting and Harlow working hard in both attack and defence too. Abby and Kate were very strong mid court players.

VICIS

A Grade – After a difficult off season Vicis A grade came together for its first game with an air of excitement. The first quarter was a tight contest with both teams taking time to settle. Amazons went into the break with a slight lead. Vicis slowed their game and took the lead early in the second quarter. Amazons pressed hard late in the game but were not able to close the gap with Vicis taking a three goal victory.

A2 – A new line up for Vicis came up against a strong, skilled Amazons side. The second quarter saw some nice ball movement by Vicis and these were finished off by the goalies. However, Amazons’ polished combination was not troubled by the young Vicis side.

B2 – The ladies had a great start to the season with limited training sessions, only going down by six points to Intruders. Helen Timms was our key defender, Tara Dowdell and Shannon Murphy shooting 13 out of the 15 between them. We have good solid bones to this team and looking forward to seeing how this season pans out.

The best players were Jade Brennan-Hill and Helen Timms. Thank you to the umpires and Intruders.

HOBITZ

13B – The girls played a great game; they worked hard to get turnovers in defence and created some opportunities in attack. It’s wonderful to see all the girls out there, happy to give anything a go. We can’t wait to see them continue to develop their skills throughout this season. Best players were Hadley Bryant and Alana Longan. Fasta Pasta voucher awarded to Hadley.

13A – It was a lovely game of netball to watch and to be a part of. This is a super group of girls who are all very keen to play and learn. Although we came up against some tough opposition, the girls worked hard to create turnovers and keep possession of the ball throughout the game. They have so far to go and we can’t wait to see them improve throughout the season. Best players were Stella Marcus and Ava Edwards. Subway voucher awarded to Alyssa.

U15 – I couldn’t be prouder of my girls’ first game. They produced some amazing plays throughout the game. The girls had an awesome first half, scoring quickly, great intercepts and strong pickups. They tired a little bit in the second half which allowed the opposing team to gain a lead. We trialled many combinations which the girls adjusted to well. They’ve got a lot of growing to do but they have so much potential. Can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out! Best players were Laycee Gower and Esha Brooksby.

U17 Red – This was a great game full of opportunities and improvement. It was outstanding to see the girls grow into their new positions and gel as a team. Some expected improvements will be made, which will help us win throughout the season. Best players were Ella Guest and Cadence Bryant. Donut King voucher recipient was Ella.

U17 Blue – The girls had an amazing first week playing against our other Hobitz team. Also, a big congratulations to our newly minted captains Felicity and Imi taking on their new leadership positions. We can’t wait to see how the season progresses. Best players were Aaliyah Howell and Felicity Kelly. Dominos vouchers were awarded to Imogen McLeod and Aaliyah Howell.

B2 – I couldn’t be prouder of my girls playing our first game together as a team. Even though the final score didn’t go our way everyone kept trying until the very end. There was lots of positive play on both ends of the court and as the game went on there was lots of personal improvement. With our joint team enthusiasm, dedication, and mixed strengths, I have a very good feeling about this season. Best players were Erin Stephens and Bianca Shepherd

B1 – The B1 team did an amazing job in their first match playing together. Vicis brought some tough competition, but we held our own. This game showed how much potential our team has, and I am so excited to see the team’s skills develop and how far we progress throughout the season. Best players were Miley-Rose Winterfield and Cadence Bryant.

A2 Red – Despite not much training together as a team, we came together as a cohesive group against a tough Saints team. We are extremely proud of how the girls came together, supported, and encouraged each other and worked hard. We started strong and were up by 8 goals at half time. We tired a bit in the third quarter but showed great composure to hold the win when the final whistle blew. Our defence worked hard against some great quality shooters and our goalies combined well against some tough defence from Saints. We rotated in our mid court and each player that came in did their job, moved the ball around and fed into our shooters. We couldn’t be prouder of our girls’ efforts for their first game, and we look forward to the rest of the season. Best players were Abbey Knowles and Zahli Feast.

A2 Blue – Our first appearance together, we knew today was going to be a challenge after having minimal time together as a group, but we came to that challenge and produced some decent quality netball. We are super excited for the season, and we can see so much growth and improvement about to evolve from our team. Imagine the results that will follow when we string together four solid quarters. Best players were Lorelle Walker and Lily Oakley.

A Grade – As many of the other teams, we have had very little time together as a group. We went into this game excited to see what we can display with many new faces and combinations. We’ve worked hard on fitness in the pre-season and are looking forward to seeing where it takes our on-court performance. The group produced four strong quarters of netball, trialling many different combinations. We focussed on working together as team while still playing a strong brand of netball. A huge CONGRATULATIONS to our superstar, Felicity Kelly for making her A Grade DEBUT! Super pumped for the season! Best players were Demi Hoffmeister and Hayley Burner.
