Strong community support was evident when the Millicent Cancer Support Group staged a successful Father’s Day fundraiser at the Domain Playground and Jubilee Park in Millicent on Sunday.
Dubbed ‘Millicent Walks Two Fight Cancer’, the walkers read inspirational messages about fatherhood and family life as they raised funds and walked the 2.5km circuit.
The support group has staged such annual walks since 2013 after beginning with Mother’s Day walks 15 years ago.
The number of participants was around 50 with the number of walkers adversely affected by the grey skies and the winter sports grand finals on the same weekend.
Support group president Lisa McCourt said the ongoing generosity of the Millicent community meant her group was in a position to make another major donation.
“Late last year, we handed over $25,000 to fit out a room at the Cancer Council’s Greenhill Lodge in Adelaide,” Ms McCourt said.
“Millicent Hospital is setting up a Palliative Care room and it has a wish list of items.
“It is approaching organisations to see if they can donate furnishings and other items.
“The Millicent Cancer Support group is pleased to be able to pay $7660 for a special bed and mattress along with $2288 for a bed settee for family members.”
Ms McCourt said the support group was now looking forward to its next fundraiser at Millicent next month.
It will be a luncheon on October 29 at the Somerset Hotel dubbed Girls Day Out with tickets about to go on sale at Heaven on a Hangar.
