Millicent volunteer awarded

Warm applause and a social media avalanche greeted Thursday’s announcement that dedicated Millicent community volunteer Wendy Thomson was the 2024 Wattle Range Council Senior of the Year.

Her name was read out before a gathering of 70 at the Seniors Month finale at the clubrooms of the Millicent Football Netball Club at McLaughlin Park.

The SE Voice promptly shared the news to social media and more than 100 wellwishers posted their congratulations and thanks to Ms Thomson.

Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll detailed the extensive voluntary contribution to the community of the recipient dating back a number of years.

“When I think of Wendy Thomson, I think of someone who is dynamic and inspirational,” Mayor Noll said.

“She sets the benchmark for volunteers and we are a connected community because of them.

“Wendy retired from Millicent High School in 2015 and has continued to assist students.

“She volunteers at the school canteen and assists with the staging of the annual Year 12 graduation dinner.

“Wendy is involved with Meals on Wheels and the Millicent Library local history collection and helps arrange the exhibitions at the Millicent Gallery.”

The 2024 Senior of the Year has been a timekeeper with the Millicent Saints, is a cast member with the annual Millicent National Trust Murder in the Museum and supports community fundraising initiatives.

A modest Ms Thomson accepted the award and acknowledged those who had supported her.

“I have just had a birthday which makes me closer to 70 than 60,” she said.

“I certainly do not feel like a senior.”

As part of the Seniors Month finale, finger food from Asia House and Acky’s Takeaway was served.

Entertainment was provided by the Newberry Park Primary School choir and the Hit and Run band.

First given out in 1991, the Senior of the Year recognises the worthy and older citizens of this community.

To be eligible, a person must be at least 60 years of age.

The award coincides each year with Seniors Month which is held around the state in October.

It is organised and sponsored locally by Wattle Range Council with over 20 events on the 2024 program.
