Nangwarry ready to rise

The Nangwarry Saints are gearing up for a big season with exciting recruits, new club-rooms and coaches who have the confidence and a fiery determination to win.

Experienced footballer Luke Thomson is the A Grade coach with assistant coach Shane Raymond by his side, who also has a wealth of football and coaching experience. Past premiership player Greg Muhovics will take on the role of B Grade coach with Mick Bonham helping out while Jamie Parsons will guide the Under 17s with the help of A Grade player Ben Juste.

Thomson said he was looking forward to the season ahead with the team already averaging more players at pre-season than they did at training last year.

“Between the recruits, the coaches and the new club going up it’s all pretty exciting for Nangwarry footy club and the Nangwarry community,” he said.

The club has recruited 10 players from various places including the Western Border Football League, Adelaide and some who have recently returned home.

Thomson said the side was fairly young last year so they have recruited players aged between 25 to 28 and are keeping as many of their younger players as possible.

“We’re going to be pretty young … which is exciting with a pretty handy draw to start off with as well I think, with home games straight up,” he said.

“Obviously getting Shane “Tassie” Raymond in to help me out, that’s pretty big, he’s been unreal.

“There’s no reason why we can’t win more than three or four games.

“With the group that we have got, keeping nearly everyone from last year and then bringing 10 guys in plus some new coaches, there’s no reason why we can’t push four or five, if not more.”

Thomson believed the most important aspect of any football club was culture and the Nangwarry players and supporters have stuck around despite the winning drought.

“As far as culture off the field and the supporter base, we’re flying, so it’s obviously just getting those wins that will be the most exciting thing,” he said.

Raymond said he could not be any more excited to get back involved in coaching with a group of players who were full of enthusiasm and committed to the cause.

“Nangwarry has a proud history in the Mid South Eastern Football League and we want this group of guys to bring Nangwarry back to the winner’s table for their loyal supporters who have stuck with the club through thick and thin,” he said.

“We can’t wait to have a beer after the first win of the season in our new clubrooms.”

The re-building of the clubrooms is well under way for the upcoming season by building contractor Mick Mullan and his team.

Nangwarry Football Club vice president Aidan Mills, who has overseen the rebuild, said he could not wait for it to be completed.

“It’s coming together now which is really good and fingers crossed we’re on track at the moment,” he said.

B Grade coach Greg Muhovics said everything was looking promising with plenty of numbers.

“Everyone’s really excited about the upcoming season,” he said.

“With Luke and Tassie doing a fantastic job recruiting people means the A’s will be a lot stronger and the B’s will be a lot stronger, which will be a fantastic year for everyone involved.”

Muhovics said it was good to be back involved with the club after being away for 15 years.

“It’s very exciting to be back after an extended period away and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

“I’d say we’d be in position to win a fair few games this year.”
