Netballers turn up heat

Mount Gambier Netball Association players braved the elements on the weekend, with heavy rain, thunder and lightning making an appearance.

The junior match of the week was the Under 15s game between Intruders and Vicis.

Intruders started off strongly with Gemma Irons and Neve Dycer combining well to shoot 24 goals in the first half.

Dycer was a key player on the court, communicating well with Irons, WA Maddison Dennis and C Angela Walsgott.

Strong defence from Chloe Schulze in WD, Jasmine Reed in GD and Ciara Henare in GK was hard for the Vicis team to play against, with Intruders seemingly almost unstoppable across the court.

Vicis stepped up their defence in the second half and took it to another level in the third quarter.

The duo of Halle Moore and Zarah Thami combined with Analeigh Anderson to restrict Intruders to shooting only two goals, both from Dycer.

Intruders kept up their defensive efforts in the Vicis circle, with Vicis still trailing 26-12 at the last break.

Intruders rallied in the last quarter, Irons shot two goals, while Dycer had 10 goals, with Vicis restricted to only three goals.

Intruders came out victorious, winning 36-15.

Saints sits on top of the Under 15 ladder with Zodiacs, Intruders and Hobitz Blue making up the top four, followed by Hobitz Red, Amazons and Vicis.

In the senior grades, the B1 game of the week was between Hobitz and Intruders.

The game went down to the wire, with spectators kept on the edge of their seats until the last minute of the match.

The evenly matched sides played a nail-biting first half.

Hobitz shooters Aimee Kilpatrick and Felicity Kelly went goal for goal with their Intruders counterparts Maddy McPherson and Amity Sheedy.

Both teams displayed excellent footwork and leading for the ball, particularly Kelly.

The first half ended with Intruders leading by a goal, 18-17, with both sides determined to step it up a level in the second half.

The last quarter was one to watch as both teams went goal for goal and in the last minute scores were tied 30-all.

A final push by Hobitz had them hit the last goal to win the game 31-30.

The win has Hobitz retaining top spot on the ladder, followed by Amazons, Intruders, Saints and Vicis.
