New owners for wind farm

A Spanish energy company will take control of 112 wind turbines along the Woakwine Range, west of Millicent.

Iberdrola has won the bidding war for ownership of Infigen Energy after an offmarket bid for the Australianowned energy business was launched a few months ago by rival Filipino energy company UAC.

The board of Infigen Energy had endorsed the offer from Iberdrola, with some regulatory hurdles to overcome ahead of the sale including the approval of the Foreign Investment Review Board.

The giant Infigen Energy turbines have dominated the skyline at Lake Bonney since 2002, while a $38.5m storage battery was commissioned earlier this year.

The adjacent Canunda windfarm has 24 turbines and is owned by French company International Power.

Since 2012, Infigen Energy has had planning approval for an additional 124 wind turbines across the region.

Contracts with landowners have been in place for over a decade.

Although the number of local employees directly employed by Infigen Energy is relatively low, contractors involved in servicing the Lake Bonney and Canunda wind farms number as many as 30.

Infigen Energy has been an active sponsor of a number of Millicent sporting groups and clubs over many years.

For example, it provided a grant to rebuild the Millicent Show Society hall at the Gordon Memorial Oval while it has naming rights to the netball courts at the McLaughlin Park sports ground.
