Office costs blowout

Preliminary estimates put the cost of the proposed Wattle Range Council offices in Millicent above the $5.5m ceiling imposed by councillors.

The council voted by the narrowest possible margin in 2020 to plan for a new complex on North Terrace with an upper limit of $5.5m.

Plans have been drawn up but a staff report has stated they will exceed this threshold.

The report has been submitted to tonight’s monthly council meeting in Millicent.

“The quantity surveyor’s initial cost estimates for the council-endorsed concept plans have come in above budget, so the architect has been tasked to reduce the scope and therefore cost of the project,” stated the report.

“This has had a corresponding impact on project timelines.

“A revised quantity surveyor cost estimate will be conducted when the revised plans are completed, and if they more closely align with the assigned budget, they will be presented to council and staff for feedback.”

A final decision on the design and location of the new office has yet to be taken.
