One day cricket action ramps up

Round 2 of the Mount Gambier Cricket Association Hoggies Wines Barber Shield competition on Saturday players will feature another one-day fixture.

West Gambier will host cross town rivals in North Sportsmans, after West claimed a good win against Mil Lel in the season opener, while North only got to bat during a weather affected match.

North has some batting depth with Nick McInerny, Nicolas Brown, and Michael Johnston.

However, West is no slouch at the crease, with the likes of Justin DeJong, Jake Blackwell, and Niall Easterbrook capable of big knocks.

Both sides will rely on their bowlers to make an impact on the game, with West needing Trent Badman and Kyal Chapman to continue to take wickets, while North will look to Isaac Mulraney to find his length early and have good support from McInerny and Declan Kenny.

Mil Lel faces East Gambier at home and will need to be sharp.

East has already made its presence felt with Dion Stratford scoring a big 100 last week.

Along with Alex Hentschke, the pair will anchor the batting ahead of Ben Robinson and Liam Turley.

The batting strength for Mil-Lel will come from Jack Miller, William Rowland and Craig Lock.

While Mil Lel will be looking to use its home ground to advantage, East has some experienced campaigners in Turley, Ben Hentschke and Alex Hentschke to drive the bowling attack.

Meanwhile, Penola will play South Gambier at McCorquindale Park in Penola.

Penola was only able to bowl last week and is sure to have spent some time in the nets this week finetuning the bat.

South Gambier will no doubt be confident for the trip north, but Penola will have other ideas and will be keen to get time in the middle.

Penola’s batting line up will be headed by Drew Clayfield and Joshua Doyle, supported by Paul Ellis and Eli Hunter.

South will look to Robert Drenthen and Stephen Easterbrook to occupy the crease, with Cam Jorgensen able to come in to steady the ship.

Michael Waters will lead the bowling attack for Penola and have good support from Ellis and the spin of Jack Mullan, while South will rely on opening bowling pair Jorgensen and Jakob Opie.
