After captivating Penola with its bespoke performance in 2023, State Opera South Australia returns to share a thrilling journey into some of opera’s greatest hits at Rymill Hall as part of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival in May.
Soprano Lucy Stoddart and Tenors James Nicholson and Callum McGing will perform opera highlights of ‘Lovers and Villains’ in a madcap performance of dramatic family feuds, passionate relationships and the highs and lows of falling in and out of love.
The performance will be just one of over 40 events to be held over the weekend of May 16 -19 as part of the Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival.
Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Committee opera event coordinator Peter Muller said the return of State Opera South Australia is a testament to the strong reputation of the festival program.
“This represents an exciting opportunity for regional audiences to experience a world-class performance, right here in Penola,” he said.
The performance on Thursday 16 May marks the Opening Night of the four-day Festival, with the prestigious John Shaw Neilson Acquisitive Art Prize announcement being held at the Penola High School beforehand.
Guests are invited to BYO drinks and nibbles to the cabaret style seating event in Penola’s Rymill Hall.
Tickets are available through www.artsfestival.com.au.
