Padthaway Lions dream of home turf premiership

Padthaway Lions dream of home turf premiership

This Saturday’s Bendigo Bank Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Football League grand final could go down as the fondest in the history books of Padthaway’s proud history.

A drought breaker in 1993 and back-to-back flags in 2014 and 15 were special, but the chance to lift the premiership cup on home soil does not come around often and that is exactly what the Lions are hunting.

Padthaway hosting its first ever decider will take centre stage against the most successful KNTFL club in history Mundulla and Lions’ coach Tarak Redigolo is hoping to create some special memories.

“We have put ourselves in a really good position with some impressive performances in the last month,” he said.

“So we are excited for the challenge of playing in our first ever home grand final and it is a great opportunity.”

The Lions have battled through the jungle this year after injuries created some headaches early in the season.

Despite knocking off the reigning back-to-back premiers in round 2, Padthaway battled for consistency, but turned its fortunes around with an inspiring win over the then undefeated Kingston.

The yellow and blue are yet to lose since the away fixture in June and enter the finals redhot after 10 wins on the bounce.

Neither Mundulla or the Saints could stand up to the balanced Lions in the finals, who can fire from all areas of the ground.

Padthaway’s only concerns is the absence of experienced Kieron Hicks who broke his hand in the last game, but Ray Jeanch will jump back into selection contention after overcoming a hamstring injury.

Former 10-year South Adelaide SANFL operator Redigolo said he is backing his boys against an opposition loaded with premierships.

“We have a full list and playing our best footy of they year right now, so the stars have aligned because we have put ourselves in a good position,” he said.

“Mundulla has been the measuring stick for many years and one their greatest strengths is their depth.

“They have great synergy, but we matched up pretty well the other week and were able to beat them on the inside.”

Around half a dozen of Padthaway’s back-to-back premiership from last decade sides hope to make it a hat-trick led by former AFL listed forward Tobin Cox.

However, Redigolo has never achieved the holy grail in his storied career and wants to paint another premiership onto Padthaway’s favourite silo.

“It will be massive for the whole community,” he said.

“The club last tasted success in 2014 and 15, but have had a couple of challenging years

since then, so the opportunity to win on our home deck is massive.

“We have put together a nice balanced squad full of guys there for the right reasons to put the club in a good position.

“For me personally to play in a senior grand final which is something I have never done so I am looking forward to the challenge.

“The boys are really excited to test themselves against a quality opposition on the big stage in front of the home faithful.”
