The Penola Tennis Club is ushering in a new era with the launch of four newly surfaced courts, which will be put to the test in a junior coaching and development program starting for six weeks from August 14.
Club president Caroline McGrath said the historic club has its sights set on filling a senior team and “at least one” junior team in the forthcoming Southern Ports season commencing in October.
“We are bringing competitive and social tennis back to Penola, after steadily building momentum over the last two years,” she said.
“This season we are focusing on junior development and have secured coach Taegan White to run group sessions in Term Three.
“We have had a lot of interest so far, but there are still some spaces available for juniors aged 8-16, whom we hope will go on to form at least one junior Penola side playing this season.”
Ms McGrath said the new courts, complete with new nets, were achieved through the work of the club’s previous committee, led by Judy Goodes-Mountford.
“The Penola Tennis Club is in a very positive position and we’re looking forward to tennis making a big comeback in Penola,” she said.
“We’re keen to hear from people interested in playing competitive and social tennis or joining us Wednesday evenings for a casual hit under lights.”
