WHEN Peter Phyland got together with his mates to start up a cricket club for his ‘older’ crew, he could not have imagined that after a decade, his club and their mates from across the border, The South East Coasters, would be battling it out in 30-plus degree heat for a shield, in his honour.
Hamilton’s Phyland lost his battle with cancer just over a decade ago, but the club he started is now a major competitor in the western division of the Veterans Cricket Victoria Competition.
The Phyland Memorial Shield was created in his honour and in honour of the cameraderie the competition brings with like-minded neighbours, such as the shield rivals from across the border.
