Plate safe secured

Mount Gambier Police held a ‘plate safe’ event in the Bunnings Warehouse car park recently due to the increase in reports of lost and stolen number plates in the region.

The event provided residents the opportunity to have a set of anti-theft number installed on their vehicle after the initiative was trialled at other stores including interstate with Bunnings Warehouse contributing across Australia.

South Australia Police Senior Constable First Class Jade Hill said the last time the event took place was more than five years ago.

“(The anti-theft screws mean) it is a lot less people that will be victimised in the community. They are a one-way screw so you cannot use a screwdriver to undo them,” she said.

“We have also been handing out promotional material around vehicle safety which we have nearly run out of.”

Senior Constable Hill said the event was a group effort by the Limestone Coast community.

“All three Mount Gambier Rotary clubs donated their time, Bunnings Warehouse donated the screws and Baxter Hire donated a sign,” she said.

“Everyone has loved it and we have had lots of feedback.

“We are happy with the outcome and there is potential for us to do this again. Bunnings and Rotary have been pleased with the result, so they are likely to be willing to contribute again.”
