Players ready to make a racquet

Last weekend marked the official transition from summer to winter sport even if the weather gods thought otherwise.

The 2021-22 tennis, baseball and softball seasons all fired into life with some exciting games, while the bowls pennant competitions continued to build momentum.

Few will forget the scenes before the first pitch of the new Mount Gambier Softball League competition where the life of Concordes legend Tammy Jones was celebrated with a fitting tribute.

The night before fans left Blue Lake Sports Park stunned after South Indians and Tigers went blow for blow in an entertaining stoush, while reigning premier Centrals reminded everyone of its class.

Finally, the threatening weather did not rain on tennis’ parade as all MGDTA fixtures went ahead at Olympic Park where some surprising results were recorded.

With cricket also starting up within the next fortnight and the sun hopefully becoming more prominent, it is an exciting time as the sporting action heats up.
