Popular tourist hot spot closed

Umpherston sinkhole/Balumbul will be closed to the public next Tuesday and Wednesday due to maintenance works.

Mount Gambier City Council Parks and Gardens Coordinator Hayden Cook said the garden beds at the bottom of the cave where the hydrangeas were located were being overrun by the ivy.

He said they would not be removing the ivy curtain, just reducing what had overgrown.

The curtain will be lifted up at the viewing area behind the stairs to provide a better view and will also be lifted by a foot or two at the barbecue area to reduce the weight and allow more clearance.

On Thursday there will also be maintenance works at the Cave Gardens, with workers removing pest plants at the bottom of the cave along with clearing out rubbish.
