Penola came out Saturday looking to play some strong netball against Bordertown in the KNT competition, heading into the pointy end of the season.
The A grade team did exactly that and in the first quarter Bordertown pushed the Eagles, sticking within three of the team as they applied some tight defensive pressure down court and onto the circle’s edge.
Penola adjusted and found some space in the second quarter, breaking through their zones and getting in good rebound positioning.
At the half time break the margin was pushed out to 15.
In the second half Bordertown continued to apply pressure and push back against the Penola side, making sure they had to work for the ball.
The full court defence and pick offs from Penola’s defence allowed them to continue pushing out their lead finishing the game with a 30 goal lead, 50-20.
It was a great four quarter effort from the Penola side, with Gorgia Robbie and Riley Buckingham named the Eagles’ best on court.
In A Reserve Penola knew they would be tested by a strong Bordertown line up – and indeed they were.
Bordertown got up by as much as six in the first half, forcing Penola to change their game, dig deep and grind out a very tough contest.
Kim Wilson was brilliant all day in defence, and her move to WD in the last quarter allowed her more room to take game winning intercepts.
Sophie Schulz was also a solid option in attack, providing a reliable feed to the goalies all day.
The Eagles pushed backed and took the win 52-43.
