Quartets collide

The Millicent Bowls Club held its Men’s Championship Fours event across last weekend.

All games up to the grand final were played over 15 ends in a competition comprising of 11 teams battling out four rounds before going into the Grand Final.

After the competitive minor-round clashes, the first team to reach the Grand Final was skipper Rod Gibbs, third Neil Whelan, second Peter Hyland and lead Glen Jones.

They found themselves up against skipper Ashley Madden, third Robert Radley, second Terry Lonergan and lead Brian Goode.

The grand final was played over 18 ends and two days dipping into Sunday.

At the fifth end all were equal at four shots each, but the then Gibbs’ team went on to win the next six ends.

This allowed Gibbs’ team to enjoy a 14 to four lead.

By the 17th end the Gibbs’ team was sitting at 19 with the Madden team needing something special on 12 shots.

Despite a late charge from Madden’s crew, eventually Gibbs’ team of Whelan, Hyland and Jones took home the Fours Champions trophy for 2021/22 season 19-16.
