Rail trail path set to launch

The ribbon is about to be cut on a multi-million-dollar tourism project overseen by Wattle Range Council at Coonawarra.

Th official opening of the Penola Coonawarra Rail Trail will be held on November 5 at 12.30pm at the Coonawarra Soldiers Memorial Park.

This coincides with the second day of the annual Millicent Show.

The rail trail is a shared walking and cycling trail using the disused broad gauge railway line.

The sealed section of the trail spans 18.7km from Riddoch Street, Penola to Glenroy Bool Lagoon Road, Coonawarra.

The Penola Coonawarra Rail Trail project was jointly funded by the Federal and South Australian governments and Wattle Range Council.

The Federal Government funding of over $1.66m was provided through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia, supporting jobs and the resilience of local economies to help communities bounce back from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The two other tiers of government each provided $200,000.
