Redbacks’ colours lowered by Lakers

The Mount Gambier Lakers Men’s team have risen to the top position in the Country Basketball League south west division.

They hosted the Ararat Redbacks at the Icehouse with the Lakers flying to score 11 points in the first three minutes of the game, shaking the undefeated Redbacks.

The Redbacks soon led the board at half-time leaving the Lakers going into the second half with plenty of work to be done.

Kane De Wit’s team hit the court hard in the second half to overtake the Redbacks by only a few points, with the lead the going back and forth.

The Lakers dug deep to take the win against the Redbacks, 91-87.

Simon Berkefeld was a standout on the court scoring 30 points in the match.

The following day, the Lakers hosted the Surf Coast Chargers from Torquay, Victoria.

Lakers led the scoreboard for the entire match and showed they are a force to be reckoned with on the court.

By half-time, Lakers led 49-24 and scored 32 points in the 3rd quarter against the Chargers’ 12.

They followed up in the final quarter with 38 points, outscoring the Chargers by 24 points to take the game 119-50 and hold top spot on the ladder.

In the end every player got a start on the scoreboard, led by Ben Young with 22 points, with Jak Ryan scoring 19, Kane De Wit 17, Shaun Lock 15, Toby De Wit 12, Duncan Reid and Jordan Holitt each with 9, Simon Berkefeld 8, Mackye Baron 5 and Jack Wilkinson 3.

The Mount Gambier Lakers women’s team only played one game this weekend, also against the Surf Coast Chargers.

The women showed they had come to play in a physical match and led 21-7 at the first break.

They increased their lead to 48-24 at halftime before going on to win 92-49.

Sarah Ritter scored 22 points in the match, followed by Sophie Miles with 16, Mikaela Horrigan 15, Olivia Wormald 11, Cara Nulty and Ava Collins 8, Maddy Wormald 7, Keryl Ousey and Tenielle Human each with 2, and Ambah Beveridge 1.

The Lakers will host Millicent Magic tomorrow night, kicking off with the women’s match at 6pm and the men at 8pm.

It will be a battle of the top two, with the Magic sitting in first and the Lakers in second place.

Likewise the men’s match will be a clash of the top two sides, with the Lakers in first and Millicent having risen to second after a 64 point win over the Chargers on the weekend, 133-69.
