Regional scholarship supports indigenous education ambitions

The Glenelg Shire has launched a search for local Aboriginal youth who have ambitions for further study.

Applications have opened for the Glenelg Shire’s Aboriginal Education Scholarship program.

The annual program offers two scholarships for local First Nations youth aged between 16-24 to undertake further study at school, university or TAFE.

Glenelg Shire Community Services Acting Director Melanie Bennett said two scholarships were available to the value of $3000 each and funds can be used to assist with course fees, travel expenses, course requirements, compulsory clothing/footwear and tutoring.

“Whilst latest Census data has shown the number of Aboriginal students completing secondary school has increased there is still considerable work to do to help close the gap,” she said.

“These grants are an important catalyst to help create change and increase educational outcomes for our local Aboriginal youth.

“The scholarship program has been on offer since 2015, and council is proud to have supported local Aboriginal youth from across Portland, Heywood and Casterton help realise their educational and vocational goals.

“Previous applicants have used their scholarships for a variety of expenses including school enrolment fees, IT and resources and even tutoring.

“We welcome applications for a broad range of educational purposes, not just course fees.

“There is only a small set of criteria – the successful applicants must identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and reside in the Glenelg Shire.

“Applicants can also be undertaking study at educational institutions located in another municipality.”

Scholarship applications close on 16 December 16.

All applications will be reviewed by the Glenelg Aboriginal Partnership Group and recommendations will go to council for final endorsement.
