Rod run spreads love

Love was in the air for vehicle enthusiasts over the weekend as they flocked to the Limestone Coast for the Valentines Rod Run 2024.

The annual event was hosted by Lake City Rodders and has been running for over 30 years.

It attracted more than 60 cars and 100 people with a mix of locals and visitors from as far as Tasmania for three days of car related activities.

The weekend started on Friday with a barbecue and welcome at Pine Country Caravan Park.

Lake City Rodders president Ken McKenzie said Saturday gave way to an observation and poker run.

“They cruise around the local area and this year they went down towards the Bay, to the Little Blue Lake and Mount Schank,” he said.

“They do an observation run where they have got a sheet of paper asking them questions and they have got to find local bits and pieces of interest.

“In the poker run, you pick up playing cards and the one with the best hand at the end of it wins a prize.

“It is all pretty laid back and a bit of fun.”

Hundreds of cars rolled out for the main event on Sunday which was a swap meet for cars, parts and auto related collectables and Show ‘n’ Shine held at the West Gambier football oval.

“We invite all the other car clubs so we had a really good display this year with all the cars on the oval and the swap meet went around the outside of the oval,” Mr McKenzie said.

“It was good weather and everything worked out pretty well, everyone was talking to each other and we get on with all the other car clubs so they all had their little groups around the oval and people could see different cars.”

Spectators were charged $5 entry for the swap meet and Show ‘n’ Shine which will be distributed between the club and local charities.

A $500 voucher from major Melbourne sponsor Aussie Desert Cooler High Performance Radiators was won by a lucky winner at the presentation at lunch at Malseed Park following the main event.

The Lake City Rodders will celebrate their 50th anniversary later this year with a get together of past and present members and sponsors.
