Rural speed limits in sights

Speed limits on six roads in Yahl may be reduced to 80kph if Grant District Council is successful in advocating to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.

At its February monthly meeting council resolved for a speed limit reduction on Woodlands Road, Lewis Avenue, Henningsen Road, Hill Road, Clarke Road and Brim Brim Road.

In his report to council, Works manager Adian Schutz said council received many requests from concerned residents regarding safety issues around the current higher speed limits along these roads.

“Council had requests to reduce speed limit on some of these roads especially since they have been sealed. Henningsen Road, Woodlands Road and Lewis Avenue were done last financial year,” Mr Schutz said.

“The Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) will need to assess these roads to see if they meet the criteria to reduce the speed to the 80kph zone.

“A speed limit reduction on these proposed roads surrounding Yahl would both increase driver and community safety and lower the possibility of car accidents.

“The proposed reduced speed limits will also be consistent with the speed limit reduction on the roads surrounding Moorak.”

Square Mile Road was initially included in the report recommendation.

However, following discussion council decided to retain its current speed limit of 100kphr.

“The one that should stay at 100 is Square Mile Road, being a fairly major through road and takes a lot of traffic,” Mr Schutz said.

Councillor Megan Dukalskis agreed, stating the road is a major thoroughfare for people travelling from Kongorong, Port MacDonnell and Mount Shank to the saleyards.

A map highlighting the roads is available to view in council’s February meeting agenda by visiting www.dcgrant.sa.gov.au.
