Saints find their stride

Flamboyant forward Gene Robinson has already produced numerous unforgettable moments, but he soared to new heights at Malseed Park on Saturday when Millicent blew West Gambier away on Saturday.

The Roos had no answers for the Saints, who marched to an emphatic 94-point win largely credit to Robinson’s golden boot.

The showman had already exceeded the 10-goal barrier three times, but none topped his astonishing total of 14 in the 13th round of Western Border football as the Roos’ slim finals shot drifted away.

Robinson’s delightful day soared his season total to 91, just nine short of the celebrated century, a feat not achieved in the WBFL since North’s Justin McConnell in 2015.

Millicent stamped its authority from the opening bounce with Robinson scoring the first major of the game after just 28 seconds ticked by on the clock.

The left foot snap set the tone for the afternoon as the home side slipped well behind the Saints’ slipstream and Frazer Bradley’s speed became a factor in the middle.

Brandon Kranz put the hosts on the board with his own snap from the top of the goal square, but it did little to shake the scoreboard after Millicent recorded eight scoring shots to one before quarter time.

The home side managed to slow the bleeding slightly across the second and third terms.

Playing in his first Western Border A Grade fixture Aaron Ramsey flew off the bench and gave Roos’ coach Steven Wenman something to smile about.

The Under 18 was one of four West goal scorers to secure best-on-ground honours, while ruckman Todd Lewis and midfielder Tom Holmes scrapped hard all day in the centre square.

However, their efforts were never going to be enough to slow the Saints march to glory, which peaked after three-quarter time.

Although the game was already wrapped up with a 53-point lead, Millicent went in for the kill.

The usual suspects of Bradley, Sam Willis, Clint Gallio, Finn Grimes and Jacob Carger combined brilliantly to win the midfield battle and provide Robinson a feast up forward.

The key target became an untouchable object for the home side, which deployed an extra man in defence to unsuccessfully slow the force of nature.

Robinson was a master at work, pulling out all his tricks to bang home nine of Millicent’s 10 goals in the final quarter.

The star forward would ever reach top gear to complete a direct lead and setup another set shot or drag his opponent Kyle Giddings underneath the flight of the ball and running into an open goal.

Robinson’s domination was the perfect finale to the Saints’ special afternoon, which doubled as a warning sign to the rest of the competition.

Millicent coach Gallio said it was the response he was wanted after a defeat to the Tigers last week that was tough to take.

“It was disappointing last week where we did not make the most of our opportunities, so it was great to see the boys bounce back and record a convincing win,” he said.

“I thought our pressure was at a high level and we laid some good tackles.

“We kept the ball in areas which are dangerous for us and played to our strengths getting our running game going.

“So many blokes performed, but I thought Frazer Bradley and Noah Lang played their best games of the year.

“Frazer was super athletic and Noah found space and laid some good tackles.”
