Millicent cattle producers are well supporting the final scheduled sale at the local yards tomorrow with more than 300 head coming forward.
The previous two scheduled sales on June 14 and May 31 were cancelled due to a lack of nominations.
When sales at Millicent have actually proceeded in recent months, numbers have seldom reached three figures. However, sentimental factors may have contributed to the relatively high numbers tomorrow.
Elders’ agent John Jolly has had a good response from Millicent graziers with some families involved in local agriculture dating back to colonial times.
“We will be having veteran Elders agent Peter Downward coming from Kingston to call for bids,” Mr Jolly said.
“Peter also sold stock at the very first market at these yards almost 47 years ago.”
Meanwhile, an anonymous local resident is sending this electronic message to farmers, truckers, agents and ratepayers.
“I am reaching out to make sure you are aware the closure of the Millicent Saleyards and cattle market will include the closure of the wash down and transport facilities,” the resident wrote.
“The entire facility will have padlocks put on the gates at the end of the month.
“In my opinion and after many conversations, Wattle Range Council seems unaware how often our wash down facility and transport hub are used It is not being treated as a separate consideration to the closure of the cattle market.
“As you know the impacts of closure will be far reaching; geographical logistics, sales and procurement for grain, fertiliser and livestock transport.
“The road safety, biosecurity and general increased costs by not having these facilities at our doorstep will be immeasurable.”
